- Mission Statement -
To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
In 1986, the citizens of this area made a decision to establish a Young Men’s Christian Association and this was done by incorporating under the laws of the State of Oklahoma as the Great Plains Family YMCA, Inc. We are also recognized by the federal government as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit charitable organization.
The articles of incorporation place responsibility for management of the YMCA in a board of directors, which is elected from its membership. The members essentially own the property and determine the policies of the YMCA. We are affiliated with the National Council of YMCA’s of the USA.
In 1987 the Board of Directors made the decision to purchase an existing facility to house the YMCA. The purchase price was $555,000, which included the facility and inventory located at 1400 Airport Road.
In 1997 the YMCA built the Ed and Winnie Ola Berrong Gymnasium to facilitate the need for additional youth basketball, indoor soccer and fitness classes as well as an indoor climbing wall.
In 2000 the YMCA began and completed the indoor, four-lane swimming pool surrounded with sliding glass windows and doors. This completed a mission set by the members to have a pool. The pool area was named the Carl Dunn Aquatics Center.
That same year the Board of Directors made the decision to have a full day care center. The property was off the premises, but by 2004 the YMCA was able, by direction of the board, to purchase the property next door to the present YMCA facility to house the current Child Development Center (CDC). It was completed in October 2004.
In 2005 the YMCA took over the management of the City of Weatherford Swimming Pool. The YMCA operates and manages the pool with the City of Weatherford maintaining the facility.
In 2006 the YMCA began making improvements around the YMCA and CDC facilities, including the addition of new cardio equipment. Also the playground of the CDC received new sod and a sprinkler system to complete the playground experience for the little ones.
In 2007 the free weights room was expanded for a more spacious look. The cardiovascular equipment was relocated to the front of the YMCA, as well as some of the group wellness classes.
